Who is Bowel Cancer UK
Established in 1987, Bowel Cancer UK (formerly Colon Cancer Concern)
is a leading charity dedicated to raising awareness of bowel cancer,
improving the quality of life of those affected by the disease and
ultimately reducing deaths from it.
Bowel Cancer UK is an organisation that puts bowel cancer patients,
their families and their carers at the heart of its work.
What is bowel cancer Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the
UK, affecting men and women equally. It is highly treatable if
diagnosed early; however 7 out of 10 people in the UK don’t know the
symptoms.
Bowel cancer symptoms
• A persistent change of bowel habit (such as feeling the need to go
to the toilet more
frequently or having looser stools) for a period
of up to 6 weeks
• Passing blood or mucus (jelly like substance) in/with your stools
• Extreme tiredness without obvious cause
• Unexplained pain and/or lump in your abdomen
It is always important to remember that most symptoms do not turn
out to be cancer.

from the disease.’

Awareness campaigns
Bowel Cancer UK is the key provider of bowel cancer awareness
campaigns in the country. The charity seeks to engage with the
general public, employees in the workplace and GPs’ surgeries by
providing information on prevention and the symptoms of bowel
cancer.
Education
The charity works in partnership with healthcare professionals to
provide education about bowel cancer. Amongst others, it has close
links with colorectal nurse specialists, GPs, oncologists, surgeons
and other clinicians.
Campaigning
Bowel Cancer UK campaigns for improved choice and equal access to
bowel screening, treatment and best care. It also works hard to make
sure the disease is prioritised, including by government
representatives and the media.
Why is Bowel Cancer UK’s work so important?
Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the
UK, yet it needn’t be. If diagnosed in its early stages, this
disease is highly treatable.

donations to fund its important work.

services nationally, bringing hope to patients today and in the
future. Any help you can provide, how ever large or small, is
gratefully received.

Every year 35,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and around
16,000 will die – that’s someone every half an hour.
