Why Organic?

Soap History

Myth has it that in 1,000 B.C. soap was discovered on Sappo Hill in Rome by a group of women rinsing their clothes in the river at the base of a hill, below a higher elevation where animal sacrifice had taken place. They noticed the clothes coming clean as they came in contact with the soapy clay oozing down the hill and into the water. They later discovered that this same cleansing substance was formed when animal fat was soaked down through the wood ashes and into the clay soil.

Factually however, the earliest recorded evidence of the production of soap-like materials dates back to around 2800 BC in Ancient Babylon. A formula for soap consisting of water, alkali and cassia oil was written on a Babylonian clay tablet around 2200 BC.

The Ebers papyrus (Egypt, 1550 BC) indicates that ancient Egyptians bathed regularly and combined animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to create a soap-like substance. Egyptian documents mention that a soap-like substance was used in the preparation of wool for weaving.

In modern times, the use of soap has become universal in industrialised nations due to a better understanding of the role of hygiene in reducing pathogenic microorganisms.
Manufactured bar soaps first became available in the late nineteenth century, and advertising campaigns in Europe and the United States helped to increase popular awareness of the relationship between cleanliness and health.
Soap has also been used to punish people for cursing or occasionally, for other infractions. This is done by forcibly placing soap into a person's mouth and, sometimes, forcing them to swallow it. It is commonly known as "washing one's mouth out with soap" or any of numerous variations of that phrase, or, more recently, "mouthsoaping".

How soap works

Soaps are useful for
cleaning because soap molecules attach readily to grease, oil and water molecules. Although grease will normally adhere to skin or clothing, the soap molecules can attach to it as a "handle" and make it easier to rinse away. Applied to a soiled surface, soapy water effectively holds particles in suspension so the whole of it can be rinsed off with clean water.

Bar soap versus liquid

Today’s pampered consumers
expect much more than just getting clean. They want to smell nice, have soft skin, look younger and have an overall experience. Simple soap doesn’t seem to provide that anymore. Sales of body washes and shower gels are on the increase. Throwaway plastic packaging adds to the mountain of garbage soIf you do want to use liquid body wash then be sure to choose something in a recyclable bottle.

..so why organic?

The quick answer is simply, "health and quality". A product can only be as good as the sum of its constituent parts, and if you begin with the very best available ingredients, there's a chance your finished products will be the very best available, too.

Soap is one of the few products to come in contact with our skin everyday. Because our skin absorbs as much as 60% of what we put on it, it is very important that we don’t allow any harmful toxins to contaminate our soaps.

Many commercial soaps available on the market are produced by extraction and refining processes using bleaching and chemical distillation. During this process much of the natural glycerine is removed leaving a soap that can be drying and irritating to the skin. Our soaps undergo no chemical bleaching and contain the natural glycerine from the oil which gives superb skin feel characteristics.
To help your skin remain healthy however, it is best to shift to organic bath soaps, which have become particularly popular today.

As you would expect, our new organic soaps contain no preservatives, synthetic detergents or colours. Instead, we embrace nature's philosophy with complementary combinations of organic essential oils for natural fragrance and unique, positive benefits.
